This delicious bread pudding is a classic dessert that is sure to please any crowd. The cinnamon and raisin flavors are a great combination. This dessert is also a favorite of children and adults. To make it, prepare your baking dish and preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Slice the bread into cubes and place in the dish. Combine the eggs, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Stir the mixture until well combined. Pour the pudding into a prepared baking pan and bake for 45 minutes. Let the pudding cool before serving.
This past weekend Kyle and I had a small BBQ with a few pals. We made hot dogs and hamburgers and had plenty left over. I sent as much as I could home with friends, but I still had two packs of hot dog buns left. And after the feast we had that day, I knew I didn’t want to eat another hot dog for a while.
A few days had passed and I knew I had to do something with the bread or it would have to be thrown away. The obvious choice when you have stale bread is to make bread pudding, but I wondered if that would work since I was using cheap hot dog buns rather than a nice brioche or French bread.
Well folks the buns worked, and they worked well. This bread pudding is too die for!
I received some fresh cinnamon recently that I have been itching to bake with, so I knew that was going in the bread pudding. When I looked through my pantry I saw raisins and thought that would be the perfect match. The raisins added a nice chewy texture to the bread pudding. You definitely need something to add texture when making bread pudding, or it can be a bit smooshy. If you don’t like raisins you could use any sort of nut, dried fruits and even chocolate chips.
Although this bread pudding is soft and satisfying on it’s own, I think every great dessert should have a great sauce. Since I used cinnamon, I picked a flavor that pairs well with cinnamon, and that is brown sugar. And also Jack Daniel’s whiskey, but I think whiskey goes well with everything!
When you prepare the sauce you are cooking the alcohol out of the Jack Daniels, so don’t worry if you are making this for a minor. It definitely won’t get anyone sloshed. But if you don’t like the idea of the liquor (or would rather just drink it) then don’t add it. You could make a creamy brown sugar sauce by following the recipe and ignoring the steps for the whiskey.
Cinnamon Raisin Bread Pudding
Ingredients
- 6-7 cups Stale Bread cut in 1 inch cubes
- 1 1/2 cups Milk
- 3 Eggs
- 1 cup Sugar
- 1 cup Brown Sugar
- 1 TBS Vanilla Extract
- 1 tsp Cinnamon
- 1 cup Raisins
Brown Sugar Whiskey Sauce
- 4 TBS Butter
- 1 cup Brown Sugar
- 2 oz Jack Daniels Whiskey or any comparable whiskey
- 1/2 cup Heavy Cream
Instructions
- preheat oven to 375 degrees
- Cut bread in large cubes and set aside.
- In a large bowl combine all other ingredients except the raisins.
- Pour liquid over the bread and dump the raisins on top. Gently toss until the bread is coated and the raisins are evenly distributed.
- Prepare a baking dish with butter or pan spray and pour bread mixture on top. Bake for 35-45 minutes or until sides pull away the pan. Let cool at least 20 minutes before cutting.
Brown Sugar Whiskey Sauce
- . In a heavy sauce pan add butter and brown sugar and place on medium low heat. Stir until the butter is melted with the sugar.
- Add the whiskey to the pan. Be careful as the whiskey WILL flame up so turn your heat down low and let the alcohol cook out of the whiskey for a few seconds. Remove from the heat if this scares you (the sauce will just be a little bit stronger since the alcohol won’t cook down as much… not that that is a bad thing!)
- Slowly stir in heavy cream once the flames have disappeared from the pan. Turn to medium low heat until the sauce is lightly bubbling, for 10 minutes. Serve warm with the bread pudding or your favorite dessert or ice cream.
